Maison a Bordeaux

Conceptual Model

The model shows the separation between private and public spaces as well as the idea of having ground floor open to its surroundings which both mentioned in the Maison a Bordeaux analysis. The middle box in the model represents the private space where it is wrapped around between two public and semi-public spaces.

Representative of the Golden Section rectangle model.

Maison a Bordeaux

Formal Devices in Bordeaux

Facade Strategies and Openings

According to Simon Unwin from his book ' Twenty Buildings Every Architect Should Understand' states that The Bordeaux House is influenced by an eighteenth century neo-classical house in Scotland House which faced the South. A visitor approach the main doorway in shade and rise onto the main living floor with a sunny view which indicate the owner lives in a more sunny and better appointed than the ordinary outside world. Which the Maison a Bordeaux has the same strategy of having a steep driveway climbing up entering the courtyard and arrived on the northern side of the building.

Besides that, Maison a Bordeaux is influenced by Le Corbusier's idea of having ground floor open to its surroundings.

Time and Mutability

Maison a Bordeaux changes with time; time of a day and seasons. Part of the house may be moved for setting up in different ways for different situation and conditions. For examples, the Platform that travels between three floors, Glass walls, Curtains, Lights of main living level are the fundamental movable elements. Moreover, the red dashed line on the plan above indicates the tracks in the floor and ceiling which are well planned and arranged for curtains. For example, large section of south wall can slide over the open west-facing terrance to shelther the summer dining room.

Proportional System

Simon Unwin suggests that the Maison a Bordeaux courtyard is a Golden Section rectangle and the open middle floor is a double square as shown in the image below.
Unwin suggests that when adding a Modulor onto the Golden Section rectangle, a number of significant parts of the building fit. In the courtyard the curve of the driveway fits neatly into the part of the Golden Section rectangle. The navel line determine the position of the stairs and the separation between the parents and the children's rooms. Besides that, the dimension of the ' upstretched hand', if rotated 90 degrees gives the width of the housekeeper's flat and guest room. The head of the 'Modulor Man', located on the moving platforms which indicate the most important part of a man the where the most important part of the building which is shown below.
Private and Public Spaces

Three different zones :
Private, Semi-Public, Public

The shrubbery surrounding the garden and the high walls around the courtyard bloack out the inductrial and suburban noises of the area.
This isolate the courtyard from the outside world to create a peaceful oasis for the family and as well as privacy.

Material used to separate private and public space. As shown below image.

Top floor - enclose geometric form, opaque and conceals the bedrooms with small port hole penetrating as windows to create views.

Middle floor- glass box, most transparent and large space for living area that is partially indoors.

Lowest floor- sits as a heavy mass that is curved into the hill, where all of the intimate activities of the family take place.

The Circulation of Bordeaux

The circulation of the building is divided into two main differentiated volumes of the house.

Circulation of the Bordeaux is separated into horizontally and vertically circulations.

Horizontal Circulation

Both spaces with centralise access point.
Each floor being inherently differently.
There is no duplicated and repeated spaces.
Threes volumes are tied together by a central moving platform that moves between each floors.
Vertical Circulation

Main central access point is the moving platform which travels between each floors.

The platform is a office space that provide access to the entire house.
The ingenious idea of creating a room that is capable of moving vertically through the house creates a spatial dynamism within the house.
The moving platform allows changing and redefining the space of the office as well as the space where it stops.
